Can my Shopify store sell in Google AI Mode and Gemini? Check the actual gates
Separate Google Merchant Center discovery from Shopify-powered direct checkout. Check US eligibility, product feeds, policies and your Agentic admin setting before treating an announcement as access.
Updated 3 min read
Google’s shopping announcements make it easy to conflate three events: a product being present in Merchant Center, a product being shown in an AI answer, and a customer completing Shopify-powered checkout inside Google AI Mode or Gemini. They are separate facts. As of 1 October 2026, Shopify says the integration and direct checkout are rolling out to eligible stores; checkout might not yet be available in yours.
Start with the route your product uses
For Google AI Mode and Gemini, Shopify identifies Google Merchant Center as the product-discovery source. You can supply products through the Google & YouTube channel or a third-party feed/manual upload to Merchant Center. This differs from Microsoft Copilot’s Shopify Catalog route. A product visible in Merchant Center is a prerequisite to investigate, not proof Google recommended it for a prompt.
Write down one exact product and market. In Merchant Center, check whether the item is present, eligible and free of actionable diagnostics. If you use Google & YouTube, Shopify specifically calls for Automatically sync products and Automatically sync shipping information in the product feed settings. If you use another feed method, identify its owner, update schedule and which item it sends. Compare the feed with the live product page, including the selected variant, price, availability, shipping and return policy. Google’s product-data specification explains how inaccurate or missing attributes can cause limited eligibility, disapproval or incorrect display; it does not disclose an AI Mode recommendation formula.
Direct checkout has additional gates
Shopify’s Google channel requirements currently say a store must:
- Be based in the United States and sell to US customers.
- Have a valid Merchant Center account meeting Google’s requirements, with the product available there.
- Have products eligible for Shopify Catalog.
- Accept the Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms and complete Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy in Shopify.
These are direct checkout requirements. Shopify says shoppers outside the US can still discover products but are redirected to the online store to buy. Google has announced expansion plans for UCP checkout, including Australia and Canada; that plan does not override the current Shopify requirement or prove a given store is enabled.
If the gates appear met, inspect Google AI Mode and Gemini → Direct checkout in your Agentic admin. It is active by default for eligible stores, subject to rollout. Disabling it preserves Merchant Center discovery and redirects purchases to your store. The opt-out guide explains manual mode and controls; a press release does not establish your setting.
Use a four-state audit
Scroll sideways for columns out of view. Keyboard: focus the table and use the Left and Right arrow keys.
| State | Evidence to keep | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Feed missing or disapproved | Exact Merchant Center item and issue | Fix the source/feed or policy; recheck diagnostics. |
| Feed eligible, direct checkout unavailable | Item, store geography, current admin screen | Keep discovery and rollout separate; do not claim embedded checkout. |
| Checkout enabled | Requirement checks and admin setting | Test a supported product and payment/delivery path. Use the shared checkout audit for product types, required inputs, delivery and analytics limits; retain Google’s current channel requirements with the test. |
| Product appears in an AI answer | Exact prompt, response, date, market and item | Review factual accuracy separately. Appearance on one prompt does not establish general reach. |
Next step: resolve the state in the audit above. For feed problems, correct Merchant Center; for an enabled purchase path, use the checkout audit and test an eligible Google journey. A separate disputed answer belongs in the answer log. StoreKnows website tools do not update Merchant Center, guarantee discovery or activate Google checkout.

Verify Google's current requirements
Check the native channel and product source, then record the buyer path you can actually test.

- Does a Google Merchant Center listing mean direct checkout is live for my store?
- No. Merchant Center supplies product discovery, while Shopify-powered direct checkout has separate eligibility and a rollout. Check your store's Sales channels > Agentic setting and the current Shopify channel requirements.
- Can an Australian Shopify store use Google direct checkout?
- Shopify's documented direct-checkout requirement checked 1 October 2026 is a US-based store selling to US customers. Google has announced expansion plans, but an announcement does not establish current eligibility for an Australian store. Check current documentation and your admin.
