Audit your Shopify checkout before enabling AI-channel purchases
Test the actual product, required checkout fields, delivery method and analytics path in Google, Copilot and Meta direct checkout. Documented support does not replace your own eligible purchase test.

An AI channel may show your product while its direct checkout cannot handle the way that product is sold. Before leaving an in-channel Buy button active, audit one real purchase path: exact product, buyer country, discounts, required fields, delivery, payment and order attribution. The right answer can differ by channel and product.
This is a decision worksheet based on Shopify documentation checked 1 October 2026. It is not a test of your store. The Shopify channel overview describes ChatGPT as discovery that sends shoppers to the online-store checkout (in a ChatGPT in-app browser or a web tab). Google AI Mode/Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta have separate Shopify-powered direct-checkout paths where eligible.
First check whether a direct checkout is even available
Scroll sideways for columns out of view. Keyboard: focus the table and use the Left and Right arrow keys.
| Channel | Documented buyer geography for direct checkout | Discovery source described by Shopify | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Mode/Gemini | US buyer; store must be US-based and sell to US customers | Google Merchant Center, via Google & YouTube or another feed method | Rollout status, Merchant Center requirements, store policies and the Google checkout switch |
| Microsoft Copilot | US buyer; store must sell to US customers | Shopify Catalog | Catalog-eligible product, terms/policies and Copilot checkout switch |
| Meta surfaces including Muse when available | US, Canada or Mexico buyer; store sells to those markets | Shopify Catalog | Catalog-eligible product, terms/policies and Meta checkout switch |
Google says its direct checkout is still rolling out and might not be available to your store. An enabled default for eligible stores is not proof that you can test it today. For each channel, read the linked current requirements and your Sales channels → Agentic status. Shopify’s management page explains that Allow Shopify to manage for me is the default and that manual mode exposes channel settings.
Build a test basket that can fail meaningfully
Testing only a simple standard product can miss the reason your main catalog cannot use this purchase path. Include one representative product per sale pattern: a standard item, one whose purchase depends on a bundle or subscription, and one requiring customer input, a checkout extension or a specific delivery method. Use an approved testing method for your store; this article has not placed a test order.

| Dependency to test | What Shopify currently documents for Google, Copilot and Meta direct checkout | Your decision record |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription, bundle, customizable or B2B-only item | All three channel pages list these product types as unsupported for direct selling. | Product ID, why that structure matters, and whether an online-store redirect is needed. |
| Checkout blocks and required input | Google/Copilot may omit some blocks; Meta says checkout blocks are unsupported. Google/Copilot do not promise that every blocking-enabled block will load. | Exact extension/field, whether the order can complete without it, and observed fallback. |
| Local delivery, store pickup or pickup point | The three pages list these methods as unsupported for direct checkout. | Buyer location, selected method, alternative and actual order result. |
| Required customer account sign-in | The three pages say a customer cannot be required to sign in before direct checkout. | Whether the account requirement is essential for this order. |
| Payment and promotions | The pages describe supported discounts and relevant Shopify Functions, but only a subset of accelerated payment methods. | Test the combination you actually offer, including currency and market. |
| Analytics | Google Analytics and custom client-side pixels do not fire inside these direct checkouts; Shopify describes server-to-server checkout-started/completed pixels. | Compare Shopify channel order attribution and your own analytics; do not interpret missing browser pixels as missing orders. |
Keep the documented limitation with the product decision. A redirect may recover an online-store checkout journey, but do not infer it makes a subscription or other unsupported product directly purchasable inside the AI channel.
Record an actual result, including the fallback
For each test, save channel, product and variant, buyer market, current settings, question or entry path, test time, checkout screen, discount/delivery outcome and resulting Shopify order attribution. Mark not tested when the channel or geography is unavailable. Mark unknown if you cannot observe the browser pixel or fallback. Do not score an unavailable test as a pass.
Shopify says disabling direct checkout in the relevant channel keeps the product discoverable through that channel’s documented source while sending the shopper to the online store to complete the purchase. Discovery and checkout are different decisions. For Google, changing the checkout switch does not replace Merchant Center product data. For Copilot and Meta, it does not by itself remove the Catalog route. Shopify also warns that disabling Catalog access cannot prevent every independently crawled reference.
If your store depends on blocks or input that the channel cannot present, test the redirected path and choose the channel setting that preserves a valid purchase. If direct checkout handles your important baskets, retain it and periodically retest after product or checkout changes. This is an operational decision, not a prediction of sales uplift.
Where product-answer testing fits
A checkout test does not tell you whether an assistant chose the right variant or explained compatibility correctly. For that, capture the exact question, source fact, response and route. Shopify’s Catalog preview can inspect raw Catalog search but does not predict every consumer answer. A compatible agent using your website tools is another route; StoreKnows’ simulated check workflow can help investigate a bounded product question there. StoreKnows does not switch channel checkouts, update feeds or certify Meta, Google or Copilot purchase behavior.
For general channel distribution, start with Agentic Storefronts explained. For a Meta-specific setup, use the Muse checkout checklist.
StoreKnows is independently developed and not affiliated with or endorsed by Shopify, Google, Microsoft or Meta.
Record the setting and verify the buyer path
Use your test basket to record what works, what fails and whether the buyer can finish on the online store.
Open Shopify's channel-management guideQuestions this article answers
- Do all AI shopping channels use the same Shopify checkout?
- No. Shopify describes ChatGPT as a referral to online-store checkout. Google AI Mode/Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta have channel direct-checkout options for eligible stores and customers, with different rollout and feature limits.
- Will my checkout extensions appear in AI-channel direct checkout?
- Shopify says some checkout blocks might not display in Google or Copilot direct checkout; it says checkout blocks are unsupported in Meta direct checkout. Test any field or validation you depend on before using that path.
- Can I keep product discovery but redirect checkout to my store?
- Shopify documents separate direct-checkout settings for Google, Copilot and Meta. Turning a supported channel's direct checkout off can preserve discovery through its applicable Catalog or Merchant Center route while directing buyers to your online store.
