Shopify Agentic Storefronts defaults: what changed and what to audit

A dated chronology of Shopify announcements and current default documentation. Use the action guide for setting changes; an announcement date does not prove store eligibility.

Updated 2 min read

When Shopify adds another AI shopping channel, the first useful question is what did my store’s settings actually do? An announcement date, an enabled default and a shopper-visible result are three different facts. Shopify’s current overview says Agentic Storefronts is active by default for eligible stores. Your admin is the place to verify your store’s state.

Use this page for change history. For today’s channel routes, open the overview; for a setting change, open the opt-out guide. Sources below were checked 1 October 2026 and describe public announcements, not every merchant’s activation history.

Date What Shopify publicly said What to verify now
10 December 2025 Shopify introduced Agentic Storefronts. That launch story now points readers to newer information. Current channel guidance and your admin, rather than assumptions from launch copy.
8 September 2026 Shopify’s changelog said Meta had appeared alongside other channels in Agentic, with Catalog sharing by default and Catalog/checkout controls. Whether Meta appears for your store, the two settings, product eligibility and buyer geography.
Current documentation, checked 1 October 2026 Shopify lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode/Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, while its management page also describes Shop and a grouped Other channels option. Inventory every channel you actually see. Named providers are not a complete future-channel list.

Shopify did not say in those records that every store became eligible on the announcement day. A channel in your admin also does not prove that a product appeared in an assistant answer.

What the current default means for the chronology

Shopify’s management documentation describes Allow Shopify to manage for me as the default, including future channel enrollment and direct checkout where supported. Restoring that mode reactivates agentic settings, including direct checkout.

That explains why a newly announced channel merits a settings review. It does not establish when a particular merchant activated it. Keep a dated admin record if that history matters to your team.

Keep public dates separate from your store’s dates

An announcement, the channel appearing in your admin, and an observed listing or order are separate events. Record your own activation or settings-change time when you can verify it; do not backdate it to a launch announcement.

The current channel list can expand. Inventory what your store actually shows rather than treating four named providers as a permanent complete list.

Act on a settings change in the action guide

Next step: use the opt-out guide to review existing access, future enrollment or checkout after a channel announcement. It covers the Google feed exception, Shop boundary and continued external discovery without duplicating those instructions here.

StoreKnows is independently developed and not affiliated with or endorsed by Shopify or the channels named here.

Act on your current settings

Use the opt-out guide to match today's control to your goal, then record and verify the result.

Questions this article answers

Are Shopify Agentic Storefronts automatically on?
Shopify says Agentic Storefronts is active by default for eligible stores, with Allow Shopify to manage for me as the default behavior. Check Sales channels → Agentic for your store's actual channel settings and eligibility.
Does turning off auto-enrollment turn off existing channels?
Shopify describes Auto enroll new storefronts as a setting for new channels. Check and manage each existing channel separately rather than treating that preference as a retroactive opt-out.
Does changing Shopify Catalog access hide my products from every AI answer?
No. Shopify says products can still be found through web crawling and indexing after Catalog access is deactivated. Google discovery also uses Merchant Center. Examine the relevant route before changing settings.
